Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2027 Permits & Visa Guide

Understand the different requirements for Indian, Nepali, foreign and OCI travellers before choosing your helicopter-assisted or overland Kailash journey from Nepal.

Check route & passport fit

Important: A visa or Tibet permit is not guaranteed by registering interest. The Chinese Embassy in Nepal announced a short-term fingerprint exemption only through 31 December 2026. It must not be assumed to apply in 2027. Indian citizens have specific guidance from the Indian Embassy on visa issuance in India.

Passport category matters

What travellers need to verify

Indian passport

Confirm Indian consular and border rules before travel

The Embassy of India in Kathmandu advises Indian citizens on the Nepal route to obtain their Chinese visa in New Delhi, not Kathmandu.
Confirm applicable Tibet travel permits and Nepal Restricted Area Permit for the Simikot–Hilsa or Rasuwagadhi sector.
The 2027 application pathway and any approved private itinerary must be checked with the competent authorities.

Foreign passport / NRI

Actual passport nationality determines the application

An NRI with a US, UK, Australian, Canadian or other foreign passport follows that passport's applicable rules, not Indian-citizen rules.
Ask the operator to verify the appropriate Chinese entry visa, Tibet travel permissions, visa application location and processing lead time.
Do not assume Kathmandu consular processing is possible for every nationality, or that 2026 fingerprint exemptions extend into 2027.

OCI cardholder

OCI is not a passport

Select your actual foreign passport nationality and disclose OCI status to the travel coordinator.
Do not assume OCI status makes you eligible for Indian-passport pilgrim processing or government-operated quotas.
Travel eligibility, invitation requirements and permits must be checked for your passport before paying.

Nepali passport

Separate nationality and route checks

The Nepal-side departure and Tibet entry conditions depend on the current approved route and operator.
Verify passport validity, any required Chinese visa, relevant Tibet permissions and return border arrangements.
Additional Simikot–Hilsa aviation and area restrictions may affect helicopter-assisted products.

A permit is not one document.

The exact combination depends on passport nationality, Tibetan itinerary, border point and the authorities responsible for issuing each approval. Travel to the Ngari/Kailash region requires specialist operator coordination.

Chinese entry permission

A valid Chinese visa or other lawful entry basis, as required for the traveller's passport and route.

Tibet and regional travel permissions

Tibet Travel Permit and additional regional/alien/military permissions where required for the confirmed itinerary.

Nepal-side route permissions

Any required Nepal restricted-area permission for the Simikot–Hilsa or Rasuwagadhi approach.

Aviation and border approvals

Confirmed flight operations, helicopter availability, route opening and permitted border crossings.

A safer 2027 application sequence

Share the nationality you will travel on

Use your actual passport category, not only your residence country or an OCI card. Do not upload your passport publicly.

Choose the intended 2027 route

Overland via Kerung, heli-assisted via Nepalgunj–Simikot–Hilsa or a permitted via-Lhasa itinerary may have different documentation.

Request written permit guidance

Have Zeo confirm the responsible issuing authority, expected processing location, local permissions, required photographs and realistic lead time.

Only then commit flights and deposits

Demand a written departure confirmation, itemised costs, cancellation conditions and a contingency plan for route or weather changes.

Start document planning months ahead, but do not advertise a blanket processing time before the applicable authority confirms the rules for your passport.

Official references to check

Government guidance may change. These sources are more reliable than unverified tour-sales claims.

Request a route-specific document checklist

Share only your passport category and trip preferences through the eligibility form. Zeo's coordinator can advise how to securely submit documents when the operating route has been checked.
